Testimony to the success of Jallean Butler

Jallean Butler enrolled at Eglah’s Training Center for Women and Families on June 9, 2016, starting in the summer class program. He became a full-time student on September 5, 2016. A slow learner, Jallean attended reading and math classes from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on weekly basis.

At the start of his training, Jallean lacked overall confidence, motivation, and interest in academics. Gradually, his overall confidence improved, especially due to the intense learning program accompanied with constant encouragement from the educators at Eglah’s. Jallean’s record of accomplishments in the skills-training was a source of his increased confidence as well as encouragement to engage in the learning process. He practiced his improved reading and writing skills through text messaging, gaming, and other areas.

In a meeting with the directors at Eglah’s, Jallean’s mother expressed her joy and hopefulness from witnessing firsthand the marked improvement in his academic and social behavior. Notably, she had previously placed Jallean in other tutoring programs where he did not yield consequential progress.

Jallean’s father expressed his son’s marked growing ability to communicate coherently (written and orally) with confidence. Jallean’s impressive progress was evidently reflected in skills-training reports generated from the Computer Assisted Literacy Software (CALS) program.

Jallean mustered the confidence and interest to explore new learning activities that involved reading and writing, on his own. But also, his parents were keenly involved in his learning. In fact, they expressed the necessity for him to continue attending Eglah’s and remain enrolled in the CALS program to reach satisfactory potential, before transitioning to high school.

In summary, on July 6, 2016 when Jallean sat the Pre-test on the CALS Academy of Reading, he was reading at a Below Basic performance level for a grade ten student, with a score of 0.0 level. When Post-tested on April 6, 2017, following 12 hours 29 minutes of training and completing 18 skill(s) on the Academy of Reading, he registered improvement with an end of year level of 5.0.

Jallean mastered 94% of the skills at the prescribed mastery criteria on the CALS Academy of Reading.

He successfully transitioned into high school – at Nazarene High School in Belize City.
