Testimony of Walter Esquivel: 23 years old

Walter Esquivel, 23 years old was born on May 13, 1997 in Belize City.

He can recall that during his early years of life, his parents were over protective of him; therefore, they prohibited him from attending regular classes at an early age.  To his parents, the importance of education did not seem to be a priority. Walter missed that opportunity of attending classes to receive his education and learn the basics in reading and writing.

In 2019, Walter was introduced to the Youth Apprenticeship Program in Belize City where he would receive skill training, empowering and enabling him to become independent. Unfortunately, Walter was unable to remain enrolled in the program due to his inability to read and write. It was at this time that he was recommended to Eglah’s Training Center for Women (&Families) to receive training especially in literacy skills.

On September 4, 2019, Walter Esquivel was enrolled at Eglah’s for full-time classes in literacy skills and computer reading. He was diagnosed as a student reading below grade level; thus, interventions were administered immediately in order to improve his reading and writing skills. At Eglah’s, we can proudly say that Walter has made great strides and has shown significant improvement in becoming an independent reader and writer.   Walter has consistently expressed interest and commitment in classes offered at Eglah’s, evident in his enhanced performance in the Computer Assisted Literacy Software Program (CALS). He now attends classes regularly despite recent challenges of inclement weather condition or threats of illness. Walter is self-motivated and is willing to take on new challenges. His aspiration is to further his studies at the secondary level and excel to become a contributing member of society.
